Overview

What skin boosters are and how injectable skin hydration works

Skin boosters are soft, lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid gels designed to be spread through the skin in many tiny deposits. A dermal filler is placed deeper to build shape; a skin booster stays in the dermis and works on the skin itself. Hyaluronic acid holds many times its weight in water, so once it sits in the dermis it hydrates the skin from within, improves elasticity and gives the surface a smoother, more even look. Some formulations also contain amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants that support the fibroblasts, the cells that make collagen.

The FDA-approved microdroplet injectable for the cheeks, Skinvive by Juvederm, is one product in this category; others are used on the neck, hands and around the eyes. Which product suits you, and whether Rethink uses it for your area, is confirmed at the consultation. Treatment is a grid of shallow injections across the area with a fine needle or a cannula, and results build over a few weeks as the gel integrates and the skin responds.

Patients from Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington and across Long Island choose skin boosters for dull, dehydrated or crepey skin that good skincare no longer fixes, for fine lines that are too shallow for filler, and as a glow treatment before an event.

What it treats

What skin boosters treat

Skin boosters improve the quality of the skin itself: hydration, elasticity, fine texture and radiance. Volume loss and expression lines call for fillers or neuromodulators, and Tami will say which is which at your consultation.

  • Dull, dehydrated skin on the cheeks and mid-face
  • Fine lines and crepey texture around the eyes and mouth
  • Neck lines and thin, crepey skin on the neck
  • The chest and the backs of the hands
  • Early loss of elasticity and firmness
  • Rough texture and enlarged pores, combined with microneedling
  • Dryness and dullness during and after menopause
  • Skin preparation before an event or a wedding

How it works

How a skin booster treatment works at Rethink

A session takes about 45 minutes in a private treatment suite at 496 Plandome Road in Manhasset, including numbing. New patients begin with a complimentary skin consultation.

01

Consultation and skin assessment

Tami examines your skin's hydration, texture and elasticity, reviews your health history and skincare, and sets the plan: the product, the areas and the number of sessions. She explains what a booster will change and what it will not, and photographs are taken so the series can be compared.

02

Numbing and mapping

The skin is cleansed and a topical anesthetic sits for 15 to 20 minutes. The area is mapped in a grid about a centimeter apart, which sets the number of deposits and the amount of product. Most boosters contain lidocaine, so comfort improves as the treatment goes on.

03

Treatment

Microdroplets are placed across the area with a very fine needle or a blunt cannula, a few seconds each. The cheeks take about 20 minutes, the neck or hands a little longer. Small raised dots are visible at the injection points for several hours and flatten as the gel spreads.

04

Aftercare and the series

Skip makeup for 12 to 24 hours and exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24 hours. The dots settle within a day or two, and hydration is noticeable within one to two weeks. A first course is two to three sessions four weeks apart, then a maintenance session every six to nine months.

Results

Results, how long skin boosters last and downtime

The first change is hydration: skin feels softer and looks less dull within one to two weeks of the first session. Elasticity and fine texture improve over four to six weeks as the gel integrates and the skin builds collagen around it, and the result peaks after the second or third session. Skin boosters last six to nine months; clinical trials of the cheek product reported improvement in skin smoothness at six months. Maintenance every six to nine months keeps the effect.

Downtime is minimal. Small raised dots at the injection points flatten within 24 to 48 hours, and a pinpoint bruise is possible. Makeup can be applied the next day. Because the material is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved if ever needed, which is rarely the case. Results last longer in patients who drink enough water, protect their skin from the sun and do not smoke.

Candidates and safety

Who is a good candidate for skin boosters

Skin boosters suit adults who want better skin quality without a change in shape or expression: dull, dehydrated or crepey skin, fine lines that are too shallow for filler, and early loss of elasticity. They work on all skin tones and pair well with neuromodulators and fillers, which address movement and volume while the booster addresses the skin. Patients from their thirties to their sixties are typical.

Treatment is postponed with an active breakout, cold sore or infection in the area, and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, with bleeding disorders or anticoagulants that cannot be paused, and during an autoimmune skin flare. Realistic expectations matter: skin boosters do not lift, fill or tighten significantly loose skin. Deeper lines and volume loss call for fillers, laxity for microneedling or other treatments, and Tami will explain which applies to you.

Why Rethink

Why patients choose Rethink for skin boosters

Skin boosters at Rethink are performed by Tami Abramov, MSN, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner. The result depends on placing many small deposits at exactly the right depth and spacing them evenly, which is a matter of technique and patience. Her clinical background in emergency medicine and interventional radiology was built on precise needle work.

The practice sees one patient at a time in a private suite in Manhasset, on Long Island’s North Shore. Skin boosters sit inside a full skin plan, so the same provider can combine them with microneedling, PRP, peels or injectables and adjust the plan as your skin changes. Consultations are complimentary, and Tami tells you plainly when a booster is the right tool and when another treatment would serve you better.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters are injectable treatments that place many tiny deposits of hyaluronic acid just beneath the skin's surface. The hyaluronic acid draws in water, so the skin becomes better hydrated, smoother and more elastic over a few weeks. They improve skin quality without adding volume or changing the shape of the face.

What is Skinvive, and do you offer it?

Skinvive by Juvederm is the FDA-approved hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable for improving cheek smoothness, with results lasting about six months in its trials. It belongs to the skin booster category described on this page. Whether Skinvive or another booster is used for your area is confirmed at your consultation.

How long do skin boosters last?

Six to nine months after a course of two to three sessions. The gel is gradually broken down by the body, so a maintenance session every six to nine months keeps the effect. Hydration, sun protection and not smoking extend the result.

How quickly do skin boosters work?

Hydration is noticeable within one to two weeks of the first session. Elasticity and texture improve over four to six weeks, and the full result shows after the second or third session, about two to three months after you start.

How much do skin boosters cost in Manhasset?

The price depends on the product, the area and the number of syringes, and is quoted at your complimentary consultation, per session and for the full course. Packages and payment plans are available.

Do skin boosters hurt, and is there downtime?

With topical numbing and lidocaine in the product, most patients feel small pinches and pressure. Small raised dots at the injection points flatten within 24 to 48 hours, and a pinpoint bruise is possible. Makeup can be applied the next day.

What is the difference between skin boosters, dermal fillers and Botox?

Skin boosters hydrate and refine the skin itself. Dermal fillers are placed deeper to restore volume and shape. Botox and other neuromodulators relax the muscles that create expression lines. Many patients combine them, and the consultation sorts out which of the three addresses your concern.
