Overview

What fat dissolving injections are and how they work

Fat dissolving injections, also called injection lipolysis, deliver a solution into a defined pocket of subcutaneous fat through a grid of small injections. The active agent disrupts the membrane of the fat cells in that area. Over the following weeks the body’s normal clearing processes remove the cell debris, and the pocket becomes smaller and softer. Fat cells that have been destroyed do not return, so the result in the treated area is lasting as long as your weight stays stable.

The FDA-approved agent for fat under the chin is deoxycholic acid, a synthetic form of a bile acid the body uses to digest fat, sold under the brand name Kybella. Fat dissolving injections at Rethink follow the same principle, and the product, the dose and the number of sessions are confirmed at your consultation. The treatment is designed for small, well-defined pockets, not for overall weight loss. Patients who want to reduce weight or larger areas are guided to medical weight management, and Sculpt & Slim injections are an option for supporting fat metabolism more broadly.

Patients from Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington and across Long Island book fat dissolving injections most often for a double chin that persists despite a healthy weight, followed by jawline fullness and small pockets on the body.

What it treats

Areas we treat with fat dissolving injections

The best results come from pockets you can pinch: firm, localized fat with good skin tone above it. Loose skin without much fat, and large areas, respond better to other approaches, which Tami will explain at the consultation.

  • Double chin (submental fat)
  • Fullness along the jawline and early jowls
  • Bra bulge and the fold under the arms
  • Small pockets on the lower abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Inner knees and other small fat deposits
  • Contour refinement after weight loss

How it works

How fat dissolving treatment works at Rethink

A session takes 30 to 45 minutes in a private treatment suite at 496 Plandome Road in Manhasset. New patients begin with a complimentary consultation, and the first treatment can follow at the same visit.

01

Consultation and assessment

Tami examines the area, pinches and measures the fat pocket, checks skin tone and the position of nerves and glands, and confirms that the treatment fits your goal. She explains the number of sessions to expect, the swelling that follows each one and the cost of the full course. Photographs are taken so progress can be compared.

02

Marking and numbing

The area is cleansed and mapped with a grid of dots about a centimeter apart, which sets the number of injections and the dose. Ice or a topical anesthetic is applied, and for the chin a local anesthetic may be added to the solution for comfort.

03

Injections

The solution is placed with a very fine needle at each marked point, a few seconds each. Under the chin this is typically 15 to 30 small injections; body areas take more. The area begins to swell within minutes, which is expected: the swelling is part of the process that breaks down the fat.

04

Aftercare and the series

Expect swelling for three to seven days, most noticeable under the chin, plus tenderness, firmness and sometimes numbness that fades over two to four weeks. Cold compresses and sleeping with the head raised help. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and heat for 48 hours. Sessions are repeated every six to eight weeks, usually two to four in total.

Results

Results, how long they last and downtime

The pocket begins to shrink four to six weeks after each session, once the swelling has settled and the body has cleared the treated cells, and the result of the full series shows about twelve weeks after the last session. Most patients need two to four sessions for a double chin; smaller pockets sometimes need fewer, body areas sometimes more. Skin usually tightens gently over the treated area as the volume beneath it decreases.

Destroyed fat cells do not regenerate, so the result is long-lasting when weight stays stable; significant weight gain enlarges the remaining cells. Downtime is real but short: two to seven days of visible swelling, which many patients schedule around a weekend, then firmness and mild numbness that resolve over weeks. Uncommon effects include bruising, an area of uneven firmness that softens with time and, under the chin, a temporary weakness of the smile or difficulty swallowing that resolves within weeks. Careful mapping keeps these rare.

Candidates and safety

Who is a good candidate for fat dissolving injections

The treatment suits adults at or near a stable, healthy weight who have a localized pocket of fat that diet and exercise have not changed, most often under the chin. Good skin elasticity gives the best contour once the fat is gone. Patients who want to avoid surgery and downtime of liposuction, or who have a small area that surgery would be excessive for, are typical candidates.

Treatment is postponed with an infection or skin condition in the area, and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy, with difficulty swallowing, with previous surgery or nerve problems in the treatment area, and when the fullness is mostly loose skin or, under the chin, an enlarged gland with little fat. Fat dissolving injections are not a weight-loss treatment: patients whose goal is larger than a single small pocket are guided to medical weight management first, and body-contouring injections can follow.

Why Rethink

Why patients choose Rethink for fat dissolving injections

Fat dissolving injections at Rethink are performed by Tami Abramov, MSN, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner. The safety of the treatment depends on anatomy: knowing where the marginal mandibular nerve, the salivary glands and the vessels lie under the chin and along the jaw. Her clinical background in emergency medicine and interventional radiology is built on exactly that kind of anatomical precision.

The practice sees one patient at a time in a private suite in Manhasset, on Long Island’s North Shore, and the plan is honest about what injections can do: Tami will say when a pocket is too large, when loose skin is the cause, or when weight management or a filler for the jawline would give a better result. Consultations are complimentary, and the full course is quoted before you begin.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Kybella, and is it what you use?

Kybella is the brand name of deoxycholic acid, the injectable fat-dissolving agent that the FDA approved for fat under the chin. It works by disrupting the membranes of fat cells so the body clears them. Fat dissolving injections at Rethink use the same principle; the product and dose for your area are confirmed at your consultation.

How many sessions do I need?

Most double chins need two to four sessions six to eight weeks apart. Small pockets sometimes respond to one or two; body areas such as the abdomen or bra line often need three or four. Tami estimates the number at the consultation and adjusts after the first session.

Do fat dissolving injections hurt?

The injections themselves are brief pinches through a very fine needle, with ice or a topical anesthetic first. A burning or stinging feeling follows for 10 to 20 minutes as the solution begins to work, then the area feels swollen and tender for several days. Over-the-counter acetaminophen is enough for most patients.

How much do fat dissolving injections cost?

The price depends on the size of the area and the number of sessions and is quoted at your complimentary consultation, per session and for the full course. Packages and payment plans are available.

Is the fat gone permanently?

Fat cells that are destroyed do not grow back, so the result holds as long as your weight stays stable. Significant weight gain enlarges the fat cells that remain in the area and elsewhere.

What is the downtime, and when can I see the result?

Plan on two to seven days of noticeable swelling, especially under the chin, then firmness and mild numbness that fade over two to four weeks. You can work the next day; many patients treat before a weekend. The pocket shrinks over four to six weeks after each session, and the full result shows about three months after the last one.

Who should not have fat dissolving injections?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, has an infection in the area, a bleeding disorder or difficulty swallowing, or whose fullness comes from loose skin or an enlarged gland with little fat. The treatment is also not a substitute for weight loss; for larger areas, medical weight management comes first.
