What PRP and PRF are and how regenerative treatments work

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is your own blood spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, the cells that release growth factors when tissue needs repair. Platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, is a newer preparation spun more slowly and without anticoagulant, so it forms a soft gel that releases growth factors over several days. Both come from you, which is why allergic reactions are essentially absent and why they combine well with other treatments.

At Rethink the main regenerative treatment is the PRP facial: medical microneedling with your PRP applied as the channels open, also called the collagen stimulating facial. PRP can also be injected in small amounts into areas that heal slowly or show early aging, such as the under-eye area, and it is the basis of PRP hair restoration. PRF is discussed case by case for the under-eye area and fine lines, where a slower release of growth factors is useful. How it works

How a regenerative treatment works at Rethink

A PRP facial takes 60 to 75 minutes in a private treatment suite at 496 Plandome Road, including the blood draw and numbing. Under-eye PRP or PRF injections take about 45 minutes.

Consultation and skin assessment

Tami examines your skin, reviews your health history and medications, and sets the plan: a PRP facial series, PRP or PRF injections for a specific area, or a combination with other treatments. Blood-thinning medication, recent illness and smoking affect the quality of the plasma and are discussed first.

Blood draw and preparation

A small sample of blood, similar to a routine lab test, is drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge for about ten minutes. The platelet-rich layer is drawn into syringes and used within minutes, while it is most active. PRF is spun at a lower speed without anticoagulant, so it is prepared immediately before injection.

Treatment

For the PRP facial, the skin is numbed for 20 to 30 minutes and microneedled zone by zone while the plasma is applied to the open channels, then a final layer is left on the skin. For under-eye treatment, PRP or PRF is placed with a fine needle or a cannula beneath the hollow, in small amounts, after topical numbing.

Aftercare and the series

Skin is pink for 24 to 48 hours after a PRP facial. Leave the plasma on overnight, skip makeup for 24 hours and active skincare and exercise for 48 hours, and use sunscreen daily. Under-eye injections can swell or bruise for a few days. A first series is three PRP facials four to six weeks apart, or two to three injection sessions four to eight weeks apart.

Results

Results, timeline and downtime

A brighter, smoother surface appears within a week of a PRP facial, and collagen remodeling continues for six to eight weeks after each session, so the result of a series shows fully two to three months after the last visit. Acne scars and texture improve step by step over the series. Under-eye treatment works more slowly: the skin thickens and the shadow softens over two to three months, and the effect lasts about a year with a maintenance session.

Downtime is minimal. Redness after a PRP facial is shorter than after plain microneedling, because the growth factors speed healing. Under-eye injections can leave swelling or a bruise for several days, and PRF can feel slightly lumpy for a few days as the gel settles. Because the material is your own, allergic reactions do not occur. Results depend on your general health: sleep, nutrition, smoking and alcohol all change the quality of the plasma.

Candidates and safety

Who is a good candidate for PRP and PRF

Regenerative treatments suit adults who want gradual, natural improvement in skin quality without fillers or heat-based devices, who have sensitive or reactive skin, or who prefer a treatment made from their own tissue. They are safe for all skin tones. Patients with early under-eye hollowing and dark circles, where filler is a poor fit, often do well with PRP or PRF. Injectables and skin boosters can be combined in the same plan.

Treatment is postponed with an active breakout, cold sore or infection in the area, and it is avoided with platelet or clotting disorders, anticoagulant therapy that cannot be paused, active cancer, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell Tami about autoimmune conditions, recent illness and any supplements that thin the blood, such as fish oil or high-dose vitamin E. Expectations matter: PRP refines and repairs, and deep volume loss or significant laxity call for other treatments, which she will explain.

What is a PRP facial?

What is exosome therapy, and do you offer it?

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells that carry signaling molecules. Exosome products for skin and hair are applied topically after microneedling and are not FDA-approved for injection. They are not part of the current menu at Rethink. PRP and PRF, which come from your own blood, are the regenerative treatments offered.

Does PRP under the eyes work?

For dark circles from thin skin, fine lines and early hollowing, yes: PRP or PRF thickens the skin and improves its tone over two to three sessions, with results building over two to three months. It does not replace filler when the hollow is deep, and it does not treat pigment or puffiness caused by fat pads. Tami assesses the cause first.

How many sessions do I need, and when will I see results?

Three PRP facials four to six weeks apart is the usual first series, with a maintenance session every six to twelve months. Under-eye treatment takes two to three sessions. Skin looks brighter within a week of each session, and the full result shows two to three months after the last one.

Does a PRP facial hurt, and what is the downtime?

With topical numbing, most patients feel vibration and light pressure during microneedling and a brief sting where the plasma is applied. Skin is pink for one to two days and can flake lightly around day three. Under-eye injections cause a few days of swelling or bruising. Most patients are back to their routine in two days.
