Overview

What microneedling does for the skin

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a medical device with fine sterile needles that move rapidly across the skin and create microscopic channels to a controlled depth, from 0.5 to about 2 millimeters depending on the area and the concern. The skin reads these channels as an injury and responds with a repair cycle: growth factors are released, fibroblasts produce new collagen and elastin, and the surface is renewed. Because the channels are tiny and the surrounding tissue stays intact, healing is fast and the risk of pigment change is low, which makes microneedling suitable for a wide range of skin tones.

Rethink offers medical microneedling on its own and microneedling with PRP, the collagen stimulating facial. For the PRP version a small blood sample is drawn at the start of the visit and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma, which is applied to the skin while the channels are open. The concentrated growth factors in PRP intensify the repair response, shorten the redness and improve the result on scars and texture. Medical microneedling reaches depths that at-home rollers cannot, in a sterile setting, with the depth adjusted zone by zone.

Patients from Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington and across Long Island book microneedling for acne scars, for the first fine lines, for enlarged pores and for a general refinement of texture and glow, before an event or as a yearly series.

What it treats

What microneedling treats

Microneedling improves the quality of the skin's surface and its support structure. Concerns that come from volume loss or muscle movement respond better to filler or neuromodulators, and Tami will say which is which at your consultation.

  • Acne scars, including rolling and boxcar scars
  • Fine lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Uneven tone and dullness
  • Mild skin laxity on the face, neck and jawline
  • Sun damage and early photoaging
  • Stretch marks on the abdomen, hips or thighs
  • Surgical scars, once fully healed
  • Neck, chest and hands, with a lighter setting

How it works

How microneedling works at Rethink

A session takes 45 to 60 minutes in a private treatment suite at 496 Plandome Road, including numbing. New patients begin with a complimentary skin consultation, and the first treatment can follow the same day.

01

Consultation and skin assessment

Tami examines your skin, reviews your history of acne, cold sores, keloids and recent treatments, and sets the plan: how many sessions, which depth for each zone and whether PRP is worth adding for your concern. Active acne, an open cold sore or isotretinoin use in the past six months means waiting.

02

Numbing and preparation

The skin is cleansed and a topical anesthetic sits for 20 to 30 minutes. For microneedling with PRP, a small blood sample is drawn during this time and spun in the centrifuge, so the plasma is ready when the numbing is. The face is cleansed again and the device is fitted with a new sterile cartridge.

03

Treatment

The device passes over the face in overlapping strokes, with the depth adjusted for the forehead, cheeks, around the eyes and any scars. Most patients describe vibration and light pressure. A hyaluronic acid serum or your PRP is applied as the channels open, and the full face takes about 20 minutes.

04

Aftercare and the series

Your skin looks pink to red for 24 to 48 hours and may feel tight, like a mild sunburn. Use only the gentle products Tami recommends, skip makeup for 24 hours and active ingredients and exercise for 48 hours, and wear sunscreen daily. Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart, usually three to four for texture and pores and up to six for deeper acne scars.

Results

Results, how long they last and downtime

The first change, a brighter and smoother surface, appears about a week after the session, when the renewed skin surfaces. Collagen remodeling continues for six to eight weeks, so the result of each session is best judged just before the next one. Acne scars soften progressively over a series; most patients see a meaningful difference after three sessions and continue to improve for months after the last. Fine lines and pores respond faster.

Results are long-lasting because the skin has built new collagen, which stays. Skin continues to age, so a maintenance session every six to twelve months keeps the improvement. Downtime is minimal: redness for one to two days, occasional pinpoint bruising or dryness for a few days, and light flaking around day three. Most patients treat on a Thursday or Friday and are back to makeup and a normal routine within two days.

Candidates and safety

Who is a good candidate for microneedling

Microneedling suits adults of any skin tone with acne scarring, early lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture or mild laxity who want gradual improvement without lasers or peels. It is one of the safer resurfacing options for darker skin types because the surface is neither heated nor removed. Microneedling with PRP is recommended when scars are deeper, when skin is slow to heal or when you want the most improvement per session.

Treatment is postponed with active acne breakouts, an open cold sore, eczema or psoriasis in the area, a sunburn, or isotretinoin in the past six months. It is avoided during pregnancy, with a history of keloid scarring, with blood-thinning medication that cannot be paused for PRP, and with certain autoimmune conditions. Tell Tami about retinoids, recent peels or laser, and any metal allergy. Realistic expectations matter: microneedling refines the skin and softens scars, and deep ice-pick scars or significant laxity call for other treatments, which she will explain.

Why Rethink

Why patients choose Rethink for microneedling

Every microneedling session at Rethink is performed by Tami Abramov, MSN, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She sets the depth zone by zone, draws and prepares the PRP herself and treats one patient at a time in a private suite in Manhasset, on Long Island’s North Shore. Sterile single-use cartridges and medical-grade serums are standard.

Microneedling sits inside a full treatment menu, so the plan can combine it with a BioRePeel between sessions, skin boosters for hydration or neuromodulators for lines that movement causes, all planned by the same provider who knows your skin. Consultations are complimentary, and Tami tells you how many sessions your concern realistically needs before you commit to a series.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is microneedling and what does it do?

Microneedling is a medical treatment in which a device with fine sterile needles creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. The controlled injury triggers new collagen and elastin, which smooths texture, softens acne scars and fine lines, tightens pores and evens tone over a series of sessions.

Does microneedling hurt?

With topical numbing for 20 to 30 minutes, most patients feel vibration and light pressure, with more sensitivity on the forehead and around the nose. The skin feels warm and tight afterward, like a mild sunburn, for a day. No pain medication is needed.

How much is microneedling in Manhasset?

Microneedling at Rethink is $350 per session, and microneedling with PRP is $600. A package of three PRP sessions is $1,300. The consultation is complimentary, and the number of sessions you need is set before you commit.

How many sessions do I need, and when will I see results?

Three to four sessions, four to six weeks apart, for texture, pores and fine lines; up to six for deeper acne scars. Skin looks brighter within a week of each session, and collagen builds for six to eight weeks afterward, so the full result shows two to three months after the last session.

What is the difference between microneedling and microneedling with PRP?

Both use the same device. With PRP, platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood is applied while the channels are open. The concentrated growth factors speed healing and strengthen the collagen response, which shows most on acne scars and on skin that heals slowly. Rethink offers both. RF microneedling, which adds radiofrequency heat, is a different device and is not part of the current menu.

How long does microneedling take to heal, and when can I wear makeup?

Redness fades within 24 to 48 hours, with light flaking possible around day three. Wait 24 hours before makeup, 48 hours before exercise, saunas and active skincare such as retinol or acids, and use sunscreen every day. Most patients are back to their routine in two days.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Microneedling does not heat or remove the surface, so the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is lower than with many lasers and peels. Depth is kept conservative on the first session, and sun protection afterward matters for every skin tone.
